What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a prosthetic that completely covers a tooth. It is usually used restoratively to treat a damaged tooth, but it can also be used cosmetically to change how a tooth looks. Crowns can be made from several materials, including ceramic, porcelain, metal, composite resin, or some combination of these materials.

What Can Dental Crowns Treat?

Dental crowns are a popular dental treatment because they are very versatile in their uses, are affordable, and are strong and durable. As a restorative treatment, crowns can treat teeth that are:

  • Broken, or in danger of breaking
  • Cracked or fractured
  • Worn
  • Weakened
  • Severely decayed and require a large filling

Dental crowns can also be used as a cosmetic treatment to change the appearance of a tooth, whether it is a severely discolored tooth that has not responded to whitening treatments or a tooth that is misshapen.

What is the Procedure for Dental Crowns?

The full procedure to have a dental crown placed will require two visits to our Cambridge dental office. On the first visit, the dentist will prepare the affected tooth to receive the crown. This will require a small portion of it to be removed so that the crown can fit comfortably. Your dentist at Dental Art Clinic in Cambridge will apply a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort for this part of the procedure. Once the tooth is the right shape and size, an impression will be taken of it. A temporary crown can be placed at the end of this appointment to keep the tooth protected.

The permanent crown will be created in a dental laboratory. When it has been completed, you will return for your second appointment to have it cemented onto the prepared tooth.
